July is an exciting time for Foundation 2, because amongst the other activity, we will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary on July 6, 2010.  For those of you who aren’t that familiar with the history of our agency, here are some cliff notes.  Foundation 2 was created in 1970 by a group of Coe College and Kennedy High School students and staff who saw the need for user-friendly youth related services, including a hotline dealing with substance abuse and sexuality.  Although in the early days our service hours were limited and mostly volunteer staffed, we eventually expanded to offer 24 hour telephone counseling and were able to hire additional staff.  In 1976, Foundation 2 expanded to offer a Youth Shelter for runaway and homeless youth.  Since the 70’s, Foundation 2 continued to add services based on community needs.  All services that Foundation 2 offers strive to fulfill our mission of being a trusted, compassionate resource for people in crisis offering counseling, safety, and support during difficult times.

How is Foundation 2 celebrating our anniversary?

We have lots of great things going on in the month of July to celebrate with the community.  The first is an exhibit about the 40 years of Foundation 2 at the Carl and Mary Koehler History Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The exhibit has 5 main components including a timeline, our locations, marketing materials, awards and recognitions and the largest component- “40 Faces for 40 Years.” For this section, staff and volunteers have interviewed 40 people who have been involved with our agency for the past 40 years including former staff, volunteers, board members, donors and clients.  You can see a list of the 40 participants here.  We will also post the 40 stories on the Foundation 2 website after the History Center exhibit closes.  The Foundation 2 exhibit at the History Center opens on Tuesday, July 6 and will run through Saturday, August 8.  Foundation 2 is also hosting a reception at the History Center to share the display with the 40 story participants, staff and friends of Foundation 2.

Foundation 2 staff and volunteers will also be out and about at the Cedar Rapids Farmers Market during the July 17th market.  We will be handing out information about our programs but also have some “birthday goodies” to share including Foundation 2 temporary tattoos, minature flyers, chip clips and back massagers.  We hope that you will stop by and say “hi!”

If you are a movie buff, you can view our ad at the Collins Road Theatre during the month of July.  If you participate in the Freedom Festival Events, be sure to see our ad in the Pocket Schedule and in the Calendar of Events.  Foundation 2’s banners will hang in downtown Cedar Rapids through July and August.  We also will be featured in the July 13th edition of the Cedar Rapids Gazette thanks to the support of Livingston Hearing Aids and Partners for Charity.  Finally, Foundation 2 is featured of “Mug Shots” on KCRG on July 6th.

Foundation 2 would like to thank the friends of Foundation 2 who made these events possible.  We are especially grateful to our 40th Anniversary Donors including the 1st Avenue Wine House, Allegra Printing, Dostal Catering, Hy-Vee, MediacomRockwell Collins, and Stephanie Severin.  Without your support, Foundation 2 couldn’t make the impact that it does on the lives of those we help.
