CEDAR RAPIDS, IA: On Friday, April 17, 2009 Iowa’s First Lady, Mari Culver, will visit the Foundation 2 Youth Shelter as part of Shelter Awareness Day. Her visit to the 3015 12th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids facility will begin at 11:45 AM. The Foundation 2 Youth Shelter serves youth between the ages of 11-17 who are experiencing a personal or family crisis making it necessary to temporarily live away from home. This 15-bed facility is currently the only one in Linn County that also offers temporary shelter and support services to youth who are not in the judicial system—a safe alternative to the dangers of living on the streets.
First Lady Mari Culver is teaming up with coordinators of youth and domestic violence shelters across Iowa to raise awareness and enlist volunteers for Shelter Awareness Day. Governor Chet Culver has proclaimed April 25, 2009 as Shelter Awareness Day in Iowa in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, Sunday, April 19-Saturday April 25, 2009.
“Iowa’s youth shelters and domestic violence shelters provide invaluable services to women and children,” said the First Lady. “The tremendous, tireless support of the staff of these organizations helps to provide help, stability, and hope for the families they serve.”
