Cinematherapy and You

September 08, 2009

Have you ever been watching a movie and felt like it tapped into something deep within yourself? Something way beyond the plot of the movie? I had that happen to me recently as I was watching the movie Marley & Me. As you may know the movie is about the life of a rambunctious but beloved dog and the family that loves him. The movie follows him through his entire lifespan and all of the trials he puts his owners through. I found myself so emotional throughout the movie ( this is not like me normally) and I couldn't quite understand why until I realized as I was watching the movie I began to really think about my dog Elvis. He is a 15 year old Beagle that always seems so full of life to me. I have had him since he was a tiny puppy. I had never really thought much about what I would do if he became really ill and I might have to put him to sleep or when the time would come for him to pass away.  Watching this movie had made me start preparing myself for the loss of my beloved pet. This was not at all my intention when I began watching the movie, but what occurred none the less.

On a lighter note, movies can work to spark feeling of joy as well. I am sure you can think of movies that you have watched that have left an imprint on you. I can think of many. If you have never seen the movie Rudy I highly recommend that you see it. It is a wonderful story based on true events about a young man who is determined to play football for Notre Dame. He overcomes many obstacles to achieve his goals. There are several books available as well as websites dedicated to the topic of cinematherapy. Here are some links and some suggested readings on the subject.
